12/06/2012 - Up, up and away

I love the smell of beer (at 4) in the morning

Good to be home - straight onto the hard stuff!

There’s not much you can say about a 13 hour flight – the highlight was the first beer at 4a.m. (English time). Instead, we thought we’d give a top 5 list of tourist things we didn’t do on this trip in Thailand:

1. Shoot any type of gun, from magnum to bazooka
2. Attend a ping pong show
3. Pay for a monkey to sit on our shoulders
4. Ride an elephant
5. Eat insects

Maybe next time…

Final beard update – hairy…

For those of you who might be worried that this is the end - fear not, it is only the beginning! Check out thebreakbetweenbreaks.blogspot.com for the next leg of this travel adventure!

11/06/12 - Close to hometime....

The final breakfast - we'd be able to have proper English breakfasts from here on in! A small compensation...

Could get used to this!
Mmmmm - pancake
So, the time had come for our final day away, and fortunately the sun had decided to come out in force for us – given what we’d heard about the English summer we made the most of it! Munched on a banana and coconut crepe whilst doing our final wheeling and dealing in the shops, then it was back to Koh Samui airport. This is one of the stranger airports we’ve been to in our time, being privately owned and basically completely outside. When the plane was delayed, it didn’t concern us too much as we took advantage of the free snacks and wifi access…

Got to love free food at an airport!
No time for us to enjoy Kuala Lumpur this time around, straight to a hostel 10 minutes from the airport for some kip prior to the main journey. The rules man, Walter, didn’t like it when we tried to come in with our shoes on, and chided Tony when he put a bag on the bed (‘don’t put it there, man’), but it was a comfortable B&B and exactly what we needed.

Key Learnings:
1. It’s pretty difficult to find anything other than generic fridge magnets throughout Thailand…

10/06/12 - I'll do Ang Thong

Emerald Lake. In case you're wondering, yes, this is as much as Tony tans....

Hanging with the cool kids
at the front of the boat!
The typical Ang Thong view

After an amazing amount of hassle to get booked onto it (3 phone calls, 2 emails, 1 frustrated lady (yes, that was Annaliza!)), we were amazed that a coach showed up to pick us up for a day in the  Ang Thong National Marine Park. After breakfasting in a shack, we wondered what we’d got ourselves into, but before long we were on the speed boat – fortunately we managed to snag the last two spots at the front of the boat which was a bit bumpy, but at least we could take advantage of the good weather. We shared this with an interesting bunch – a couple of excitable Swiss girls, some uber-cool New Yorkers (where the water’s black, apparently), and an Eastern European couple who didn’t have 5 English words between them. Conversations don’t get more free flowing - you can imagine!

Tony's modelling career wasn't
starting anytime soon...
The views just kept on coming
Stopped for a quick snorkel, but found viewing the fashion shoot on the adjacent boat we were moored to was a far more entertaining affair. Tony’s efforts at replicating the poses fell way short of the mark! A quick stop off to see the Emerald Lake (along with every other tourist in the region!) was followed by tucking into a buffet lunch (Tony hadn’t learnt from the previous time, and attacked it like there was a world food shortage!).

Got to love the windswept look
A post buffet wander

On the lookout for Bond...
James Bond...
A unique island experience
To burn off the food we had a canoe over to James Bond Island #2 – not quite as impressive as the original but great to see. After a bit of tanning time on the beach it was back on the boat to head back to Koh Samui and say goodbye to the superb views. The journey back was quite bumpy, but there was no need to cry about it (like a lady in the back of the boat)!

Good oar action

Exercise done for the dat

Given our hotel’s proximity to an alternative pier, we were personally dropped off and felt like celebrities as we walked past all other passengers. It was going so well, until Annaliza pretty much fell off the boat onto the pier – all street cred lost immediately.

Key Learnings
1. Tour operators in Thailand double up as would-be photographers – we’d never had so many offers to have our photo taken in a single day!

09/06/2012 - Who wants to live forever? Diiiiiiiiive!

[For those of you who might not get the obscure film reference in the title, you've not seen Flash Gordon recently - check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5HfDIwNI8w]

Back at our base in Koh Smui for another lovely sunset

Leaving Koh Pha Ngan behind
First dive down - knackered!
We arose, very skeptically, at an unreasonable hour to get packed before the start of the dive trip, not for one second believing it was going to happen. Great to be mistaken, even if it did mean a slight concern on what type of water conditions we’d be facing…

Second dive down - sunburnt! Knew we'd forgotten something...
The car journey was probably more intense than the boat – Tony sat on the open back end of the ute, clinging on for dear life as the driver sped round the corners and down the hills on the way to the pier.  We had two dives at Sail Rock, the premium dive site in the area and the most likely place to get another glimpse of Whale Sharks, but despite excited shouts prior to the second dive (from seeing a large shadow in the water) there was no joy on that score. Not to worry – we saw a lot of other decent stuff (a variety of nudibranch, cool batfish, moray eels, cleaner shrimp, jaans pipe fish).

Taking the big boys boat back to
Koh Samui
Upon arriving back on dry land, we headed straight to the port and back to Koh Samui. Was very nice to arrive at accommodation we were very comfortable in (after scoring another free upgrade to a beach side view – sweet!), so enjoyed another sunset at the rooftop pool.
Back in our home away from home

Key Learnings:

1. Don’t trust the first price you get when it comes to private taxi transport on Koh Pha Ngan – for the same journey back to the port this time we got it for less than half our previous price…

08/06/12 - Sunning it up

Struggling...
And relax!
Really struggling/failing...

Unfortunately hadn't seen one on our travels to date...
Ironically, despite a diving trip not going ahead, the weather was absolutely amazing for the majority of the day, so we caught lots of rays by the pool and registered for a dive the following day. Fingers crossed for no big storms overnight – things did not look good when the power went out at the resort for half an hour…

Close your ears...

Key Learnings:
1. Even if Annaliza is aware of a massive gecko in the room, that doesn’t stop an ear splitting scream that would make Maria Sharapova jealous!

07/06/12 - Cruising to the other side

Goodbye Than Sadat - a slightly more civilised sunrise than at Hat Rin!

Didn't dare get out the camera
before the paved roads!
Haad Yao beach - come on now sun!
After 4 nights at the same secluded spot (apart from the trip to Hat Rin!), we decided it was time to move on and see a bit more of what Koh Pha-Ngan had to offer. The only way out (other than the boat we came in on, which wasn’t running today anyway, much to the annoyance of other guests and our amusement!) was via a rickety ute tuk-tuk which had to contend with roads that even the Beaut wouldn’t manage, combined with some intense gradients. Very glad we weren’t driving!

Great to have a pool table again - Annaliza needed some practise -
remind you of anything Danny (count the number of balls!)

Upon getting to the resort, we immediately went to the dive shop to book ourselves in for an outing the next day, only to be told it wasn’t happening due to 1.5m waves. Bummer. We were told to keep our fingers crossed for the day after, but enjoyed the sun and a few games of pool for the rest of the afternoon.

Key Learnings:
1. Trying to get on an inflatable Lilo in the pool is harder than it looks
2. Even if you fill out slips of paper to give your dinner order that still doesn’t mean you get what you ask for. Unfortunately the resulting free pizza didn’t land on our table.
