08/05/12 – Shark encounters of the third kind

[Please note - pictures below of whale sharks are NOT real - we have currently been unable to download the images of the real thing from the DVD provided on the tour]
Sharking around
An impressive whale shark
impression...
Forget Jonah and the Whale, here's Tony and the Whale Shark!
After having seen white-tipped reef and wobblegong sharks the day before, today was reserved for the biggest fish in the ocean, the Whale Shark. After a bit of an adventure prior to getting onto the boat (refer to key learning #1 below), before too long we were kitted up and just about to jump in to snorkel with the first whale shark of the day, but then it dived never to been seen again (that day). We started to worry that it was going to be one of those days, but thankfully not – we were in the water shortly after and following a last minute change of direction the 3-4m beauty was headed almost straight for us both. Fortunately Annaliza was on top of her game, as Tony was looking in totally the opposite direction when it was right there. A bit of guilty satisfaction was had when others in our group hadn’t seen it!

Yardie Creek

4 more successful snorkels later with a lady of 6m, and you couldn’t wipe the smiles off our faces. If you ever get the chance to snorkel with these guys, we’d strongly recommend you go for it – no experience required.

At the top of the creek
Another amazing impression...
Headed into Cape Range National Park after being dropped back at the pier for a quick walk at Yardie Creek, followed by a bit of kangaroo avoiding on the road at dusk whilst heading back to the camp site – fortunately no incidents this time!

 Key Learnings:
1.       Don’t try and be clever with getting camping in the National Park when you’re booked onto a whale shark tour. They won’t wait around for you…
Watch out for these guys!
2.       Hang out at the back of the group when in the water with whale sharks – that way you’re the last to see it but the first to swim alongside it as it passes.
3. ‘Widey’ is a better name than ‘Whashy’ when it comes to names for toy whale sharks…
