16/05/12 – Birthday boy

Windjana Gorge

A nice pair of Boabs

More Gorge action

We were pretty gutted to be leaving Broome after an amazing action packed 3 days there, but the road beckoned – especially given we hadn’t even set foot in the car the day before! This time the trip to Derby took quite a bit longer, but since we’d had the comprehensive tour the previous day we only needed to stop for fuel and tyre pressure check.

Smile for the camera!

Time for a spot of reflection

From there it was time to jump on (the start of) the Gibb River Road. It was with a bit of trepidation we made the turn onto it, as we’d heard very mixed reports on the 2WD accessibility of the road, but we trusted the literature and enjoyed a fairly smooth ride to Windjana Gorge, the first stop of interest in the Kimberley. A brief stroll turned into a bit of a hike enjoying some more gorge reflections in the company of freshwater crocs, and by the time we got back the sun was too low to contemplate going further that day. Rather, we took advantage of the bush camping availability, sat back and prepared a birthday risotto feast (well, Annaliza did – inspired by Lotti!). Arguably one of the best birthdays Tony has ever had.

 Key Learnings:
Make a wish
1.       It’s possible to put candles on and make a birthday message from Lamingtons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamington for the English who don’t know what they are).
2.       These go very nicely with a Muscat from Politini’s winery in King Valley.
