14/05/12 – Dino spotting...

We looked good, when we weren't trying to move!

Shelling out

After watching the recommencement of hostilities end up with the Frenchies getting evicted from the campsite, we headed into the town centre to have an expansive cooked breakfast, stock up on supplies, do a bit of souvie shopping and get the spare tyre fixed.

We were told they're around
here somewhere
Footprints - they must be
somewhere close!

Stopped off at Guathemene Point to search for dinosaur footprints, but unfortunately the tides were too high so had to settle for the views back across Cable Beach and the example footprints. In the afternoon we delved into the ocean proper on kayaks, around the same area – getting the views of the sunset from the sea was refreshingly different. Marine life spotting was good as well – saw more dolphins and a turtle (albeit briefly).

No sign of the dinos here...

A job well done

After sorting out the quickest dinner and laundry ever, we headed out into the bush out of town for Greg Quicke’s Astro Tour. Unbelievably clear night sky (which only happens in Broome 300 days a year!) and stunning views of the Milky Way and Saturn’s rings – the only downer was in the rush we neglected to load up on bug spray, and were hassled by swarms of mozzies the entire time. Escaped with surprisingly few bites which was a relief!

Key Learnings:
1.       Red Balloon are good enough to give you a 30 day grace period – thanks for the kayak tour Nick!
2.       Language has not evolved since the days when it was believed that the earth was flat – ‘watching the sun going down’ being a prime example (rather than ‘watching the earth rotate away from the part of the sky that the sun is in’)
3.  Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali (cannot confirm the spelling...) are the stars representing the balance beams on the Libra constellation, and perhaps the coolest star names around!
