29/04/12 - Lighthouse action, fine wine and then a good dine

Some winery fun, purchase in hand!

First few steps up the wet Karri...
A bit of swinging...
Are we South, or West?
Lighthouse lookout
The rain persisted in the morning, Annaliza’s excuse for not climbing the 68m Karri tree but with more wineries on the horizon it wasn’t too much of a tragedy. Before we got stuck into them, we got a bit of history and more ocean views at the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse tour whilst steering clear of a couple of oldies who seemed to attract more than their fair share of insects. Cape Leeuwin is the most South-Westerly point in Australia (i.e. not the furthest point South, or West) – where the Southern Ocean meets the Indian Ocean.

Another purchase in hand
A 'Must' visit
AMargaret River is famous for its Chardonnays and Cabernets, so not entirely up our street – probably a very good thing as the end tally was 6 wineries visited, 13 bottles purchased. Was looking like we’d have to keep enjoying vino in the evenings – what a pain! Had booked ourselves into a nice restaurant that night (courtesy of Nina’s Christmas pressie – thanks Sis, it was delicious!), so decided to live it up properly and stay in a motel as well – didn’t fancy another night of rain in the tent.

 Key Learnings
          1. The job of a lighthouse keeper is more challenging than you’d imagine.
          2. Vintages motel in Margaret River has a very comprehensive collection of free DVD’s and Strictly Ballroom is a more light hearted movie than Drive.
